8th Pay Commission Explained

Published: October 2026 • Verified Official Sources

The 8th Central Pay Commission was approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2025 and is widely expected to be implemented with effect from 1 January 2026.

What does a Pay Commission do?

Every ~10 years, a CPC reviews the pay structure, allowances, and pension benefits of central govt employees. The 7th CPC (effective 1 Jan 2016) introduced the Pay Matrix and the 2.57x fitment factor.

Likely fitment factor

Most analysts expect the 8th CPC fitment factor to land between 1.92x and 2.86x. Employee unions are pushing for 2.86x; the eventual figure will be set by the commission's report.

New Basic Pay = Current Basic Pay × Fitment Factor (rounded to next ₹100)

What about DA?

Historically, the existing DA percentage is reset to 0% at the start of every CPC. So at implementation, your basic jumps via the fitment factor, but DA starts again from zero and grows with inflation.

Use the Salary Calculator's 8th CPC mode (where available) to preview your projected basic pay under different fitment factor assumptions.
